No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If I got in a collision with a car from the 70s with a car today, would not the 70s car win out since it would primarily be metal? If so why don't people buy more 70's cars?
2·6 days agoThe sad thing is how good some of those family cars that were so god damn pedestrian 20 years ago are now.
I drove one of the v6 Camrys with the 8 speed… 300hp and half a second faster over the quarter than the gt86… Sure its not manual.and isnt rwd but for a daily… it fucking slapped. “iT cAnT dRiFt” yeah I’m a 40yo man with two kids seats in the back, I’m not trying to tackle Mt Akina.

Parts and servicing is a big problem now. A lot of shops wont touch anything they cant plug a diagnostic computer into.
Some parts are made of unobtanium and require complex workarounds or paying through the nose for parts.

3·6 days agoI think thats partly because of the 80s and 90s when unibody manufacturing became very commonplace but powered everything and tons of tech wasnt commonplace yet.
People just assume cars kept getting lighter.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Inside you there are two wolves. One is how much cops suck. The other is how funny it is to watch sovereign citizens get arrested.
16·7 days agoI dont hate cops, I hate that they dont live up to the image they want us to believe and be worthy of the respect that they think they are owed.
Its actually sad that a dystopian facist parody such as Judge Dredd is actually fairer and more just than what we have now.

Games@lemmy.world•I started playing WH40k Rogue Trader and I'm digging it, but I know virtually nothing of Warhammer. Any super basic world info I should know going in?English
2·27 days agoI really enjoyed doing a Cain novel, then a Gaunts Ghosts novel, then a Cain novel and so on.

I would say with almost unseemly haste

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What movie do you think is really underrated?
3·1 month agoAs much as Tom Cruise is problematic, he also likes to sign on to do really good standalone Sci-Fi.
I posted a few days ago about how there isnt anywhere near as much outrage about Iran as Palestine because Iran has been talking shit about death to the west and death to Israel for 40 years.
This is the equivalent of the mouthy kid getting snotted by the schoolyard bully after running his mouth. I dont like either of them and I’m not surprised someone finally got fed up.
That being said. When the news continually reports about the price of oil per barrel IN USD and tries to blame literally anyone but THE US for the spike in price without ever referencing that we are forced into paying for oil in the currency of the country causing the price spikes… my blood pressure does go up.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there any good laptop cleaners so I can set it to max settings and get rid of bloware that are free?

I will die on this hill. BBT was 6 seasons of a quality sitcom dragged out over 12. If a skilled editor went through and cut out all the filler, it would be a much better show.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do YOU think the resource drain associated with AI will ever be offset by future capabilities?
5·1 month agoThe problem isnt “could AI be useful?” Because yes, it very much could Its “Can AI be trusted with the data it needs?” because thats also a conversation about “Can the organisation that owns the AI be trusted with the data?” and “Can those people be trusted to work for the betterment of society?”
Imagine if you had live tracking information about every car on the road nationally and could map out their typical routes. That information could be so useful in terms of traffic optimisation, planning future road developments, enhancing and expanding public transport. If you reduced the amount of driving time and miles done by a typical car annually by 10% thats effectively 10% less emissions, 10% less petrol used, 10% less tyres… you get the idea.
Now do you trust your government, let alone a private profit seeking entity to use that data ethically to reduce consumption? Because I sure as fuck dont.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I don't have money to pay premium to not see ads. What in the world makes you think that I have money to buy what you are advertising me?
19·1 month agoOr worse.
Theres a product I need, never seen an ad for it. Go online, buy it. Thats all my ads are for the next 3 months like I’m some sort of fucking collector now.
NGL I do love a good sports movie but those are the easiest low hanging fruit examples I can think of because you dont even need to pretend like the original didnt happen,“Our baseball team sucks AGAIN” isnt a complicated plot. You can reference the original, update the humor, have cameos and its all just fun.
They need to stop trying to remake and reboot beloved franchises that nobody is asking to have remade. Remake fun, make it fun and let people eat popcorn.
Hear me out here… I want more remakes. But remakes for the right reasons.
White Men Cant Jump was a good movie for 1992, but it was hardly oscar bait. The 2023 remake wasnt bad, it was a fun revisit. I enjoy it because it gives me the feeling they actually had fun making it. Do it with Major League or The Replacements, dont reinvent the wheel just make a VERY similar movie with serious actors who want to have some fun, break their mould, tell some dick jokes. Dont cast whoever is currently hot or someone I’ve seen in 28 contrived comedies. I want Timothee Chalomet and Benedict Cumberpatch as players with unusual names have an in character argument about who has the stupider name.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Avocado. Is it really so untasty or I am doing something wrong?
16·1 month agoWithout getting too foodie about it. Its blandness is its strength, it adds moisture and a creamy texture to foods, especially salads sandwiches and tacos without using unnecessary oil or animal fats and it counts as a fruit/vegetable in your diet.

My wife has warned her friends “Never refer to my husband looking after his kids as “babysitting” unless you want a snarky, probably very rude response.”
