I don’t know enough about the stuff to form a strong argument but I feel if they live on our plane of existence, they experience time. And if they’re intelligent enough to communicate with us, they could perceive the passing of it. Counting events of some kind would just come naturally

I feel like any civilization advanced enough is going to have no problem with that.
A body of water is connected but you can count the waves. They’d surely count repetition, too, such as their planet rotating and and orbiting it’s starting. Or sound - “click” one “click click” two.
And if they’re as intelligent as humans, both species are able to learn new abstract concepts

Interestingly, the study attributes the problems to the drivers not the cars.
Because aside from random catastrophic failure, the vehicle doesn’t make you cash. The driver or Tesla’s “self-driving” does

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Back in the day the world had The Great Dictator speech speaking the truth. Then came Network with the I am mad as hell. In this era what speech are we going to look back from the future?
1·3 days agoI’m jumping on the dog pile to tell you to watch Andor. I am NOT a Star Wars guy but I got talked into this one by a friend who knows my general distaste for the franchise.
It’s fantastic, I really have nothing bad to say about it. It’s not campy like Star Wars, it doesn’t feel rushed, and the stakes a lot more visceral.
It’s also extremely relevant in 2026

Tap for spoiler
There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy.
Remember this, Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause.
Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.
And remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.
Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empires’s authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege.
Remember this: Try.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Can people tell sex of a dog just by looking at the dog?
52·5 days agoHe, she, his, her…my dad will use each one to refer to the same dog at different times. He’s done this with every dog any of us have ever had. We’ve given up correcting him.
So maybe pronouns literally ARE too much for some people lol

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Other than money, what's something you would want an unlimited amount of?
21·5 days agoWhy?? This is my answer as well. There’s just not enough time in the day to do all the things I want to do. There are so many things I haven’t even bothered trying because I know I don’t have the time to learn it well enough for it to be worthwhile.
I know my car repairs are DIYable but I don’t have the prerequisite knowledge so it will take me too long to be cost effective. If I didn’t have to sleep, I’ve got an extra 8 hours a day to learn.
Why? The existence of an achievement doesn’t mean you have to do it.
It’s the easy ones that should go away. They’re just participation trophies, you didn’t “achieve” anything by beating the game. They should be actual challenges that most people can’t overcome…that’s what makes it an achievement
Yes it’s Lemmy markdown for superscript. Or at least that’s what my client tells me
Yes, that’s the guy!
It was misinformation, though. Q and the most extreme bigots are from 8chan1. I don’t think you did it deliberately which is why I didn’t call it disinformation, it’s just not accurate
1 Of the chans. There’s plenty of forums that make 8chan look tame.
Q is from 8chan. One could argue that 8chan came from 4chan but they were two distinct beasts at the time. 8chan is (was?) where the people too extreme for 4chan went.
Not defending 4chan, just correcting the misinformation.
Your friend is one of us. A normal audiophile!
Yeah, not to mention the loudness war changing how things were mixed.
And like with most art, the artist doesn’t get a say in how you appreciate it

Be honest, how many audiophiles do you actually know? I work in pro AV and have been surrounded by audiophiles for 20+ years and this applies to exactly 1 person I’ve ever known and it was freshman year of college
Sounds like this person you’re describing is just a douchebag who wants to sound smart. We’d love to tell you all about our systems but we’re not gonna complain about your Walmart soundbar unprompted
exactly how the music was meant to be recorded and heard.
Is it? Every producer is different, every studio has different equipment and most importantly, everyone’s ears are different. You can’t possibly know what they intended.
The truth is that the correct way to listen to music is however you like it to hear it!
