Likewise, if I run across an Ubuntu 23.10 install, it’s not any older than October 2023, but the 18.04 deployment is a few years old.

While yes, both are Semitic people, the term ‘anti-semitic’ was specifically coined by Nazi Germany to make their genocide seem like it had a basis in science. They specifically used it to refer to Jews. Nobody uses “anti-semitic” to mean all semites except hate groups and holocaust deniers who are trying to say “see, it doesn’t even mean Jews specifically! I made the same jump about 4 months ago. I had a long history of running servers and trying Linux desktop here and there and finding it lacking. I installed Ubuntu because that was the popular distro for the past 15-20 years. I gave it a month. It blew. Bugs and general broken shit that I had to constantly repair. I finally gave up and figured if I was going to spend time tinkering with every goddamn thing, I may as well be using Arch. Installed Arch and I’m having a much better time. I still have to troubleshoot and fix the odd broken thing, especially after package updates, but it’s less tinkering than I’ve had to do with either Windows or Ubuntu. I’m not saying Arch is your answer, but I bet it’s “not Ubuntu”.

The mini-USB console port? Yeah, that could be a similar issue, but I’ve never had to use that port while a device is in active production. If I can’t access the device via IP on our management fabric, the device is probably in a broken-enough state that I can probably unplug a cable or two to attach a laptop and troubleshoot.

I migrated from Firefox to Chrome years and years ago when Chrome was lightning fast with a bazillion tabs open and Firefox had some memory leak that forced me to reload a couple times a day. I have since moved back and realized all my old problems are no longer a thing, but I can definitely see why some would have made the switch and never tried moving back.

Yes, we can generally understand each other. When my American cousins visit my other cousins in northern Italy, they of course speak English if the Italians know English or Italian if the Americans know Italian, but when some members don’t share a common language, they often make a fair conversation with the Americans speaking Spanish and the Italians speaking Italian. They both slow down and try to simplify their vocabulary, but you can generally converse pretty fairly with context clues.
Stupid? Maybe if verifying “facts” is your sole metric. I know people who aren’t very media savvy who fall for some stupid propaganda, but they could empty my car’s engine bay and put it back together again and have it cranking the same day. Or you can drop them in any body of water in a 250km radius and they’ll know what fish can be caught there and be able to hook an edible-sized one in half an hour or less. We don’t all have the same skill sets, but we ain’t all “stupid”.

I think after the original author is long dead, I’d like to see new perspectives breathing new life into old fictional characters.
