Watched this earlier today. Was a good episode. Most of his November eps have been great.

I’m impressed with his kitchen aid microwave

This was cool but it made me a little sad to finally know that my 15 year old microwave is just as dumb as I always knew and the button just starts a timer, nothing fancy.

Let’s not forget that most popcorn has been hit with the grocery shrink ray so that button is utterly worthless now

I purchased that Sharp microwave in the 90s, don’t know, lost track of it, moved across country into a house with a built-in microwave that is also a Sharp.

Ever since I saw his videos I feel like I somehow won the microwave feature lottery.

It’s a good unit, weird they aren’t all as good or better.

Hoe much microwave popcorn is consumed in USA families generally?

I’ve never seen a microwave with that setting. I can’t even think of anyone that would need it, let alone over engineer an appliance over.

We like popcorn in the US. A good chunk of the local grocery store aisles are dedicated to it.

But honestly, we put corn in fucking everything. Tortilla chips, fuel for cars, sugar for everything under the sun.

People of off the boat, saw what the indigenous people were consuming, and then decided that corn and tobacco were the best things ever. Were easing up on the tobacco these days though.

Yeah the tobacco thing was way earlier than over here. Though it does get more strict.

Thing is that too include a special microphone in a microwave to listen to popcorn pop is both incredibly specific and over engineered. And I absolutely love every but of that.

My thing is though, does one use it?

I’ve never heard of the microphone thing, but I know a lot of microwaves have had preprogrammed food buttons that either have a timer / power level setting or a steam sensor.

The popcorn thing might be a US thing, but preprogrammed food mode buttons are on lots of microwaves all over the world.

That’s exactly why I asked. It’s somehow significant enough.

If they know it exists and works, then it’s fantastic, as good as doing it yourself.

If it’s a garbage timed thing, it’s possible to start a fire. Out of fear for this kind of functions, the special functions are rarely even tried.

I haven’t seen many microwaves without a popcorn button since the 90s. We usually skip over the few that don’t when we need to shop for a new microwave (which I’ve bought two microwaves in the last twenty years, so not a common expense). I’d consider it a basic function, not over-engineering.

If there’s a microphone installed specifically for that it kind of is, though.

It is common enough here. I go through periods of buying microwave popcorn every once in a while and stop. I use the microwave button every time.

This video inspired me to try out the sensor reheat setting on my microwave today and it worked pretty well at reheating chili!
