Why are all the #peertube instances defederated from each other?

@fediverse

Has there been drama over there or something?

    @Shkshkshk @fediverse

    My guess/experience.

    - several spam attackes in the last few years led to a lot of defederation of poorly moderated instances.

    - opt in federation model combined with lazy and/or overworked sysops

    - desire to curate the recent videos feed by excluding possibly problematic federation partners.

    It would be great if there was at least once instance that was federated to most of the other instances (except Nazis and porn) just so lurkers could keep track of what’s being posted via ‘Recently added’.

    Does anyone know of an instance that does something like this?

          Interesting. I might need to check on that. I have discussed with framatube in the past about discoverability. Also, the kodi app had been outdated for a while. I think they’re struggling with popularity. Youtube is still the monopoly and peertube probably doesnt have that much money to throw at competing. Also the p2p stuff sparked some privacy concerns. I‘ll have a look at my peertube instance later and check whats new.

            Well using Libre.Video on NewPipe turned out to be a bust. It only plays Local video, everything on Recently added and Trending fails.

            I tried to use Fedilab but it wont let me lurk, requires a login to use an instance which is not possible because Libre.Video has user registration disabled.

            So now I’ve added Peertube 1312 to NewPipe, it appears to be following more instances and the Recently added, Local and Trending videos are all playing. I might be sorted.

              So first of all, you can use a mastodon account (i dont know about other ap accounts tbh) to comment and vote on peertube. So thats not too bad imo. unless I‘m not getting something rn? I checked, my instance is online and trending works. You can check it out at https://peertube.giftedmc.com

                I haven’t used Mastodon since creating an account years ago but it’s good to know I can go down that route as an alternative.

                I added your instance in NewPipe and Trending, Recently added and Local all work fine.

    I feel like it’s because of the risky nature of video content and it appearing to be hosted by the site

    I run a small instance that doesn’t have open registrations and is very limited in who it follows to prevent risky videos from accidentally being rehosted (and to host content I helped make)

    This is absurd anyway.

    There is something working out there which can be implemented by anyone even including entire countries and we keep seeing YouTube links everywhere. Even NASA gave up their streaming service. It once supported any kind of player and they didn’t even need to pay for it. Any streaming host will carry NASA TV, they may even pay extra for the privilege.

    This isn’t ignorance, some people are getting paid big time. Also a reminder for countries other than USA: You are using a American company service which is bound to American laws. You are also sending your citizens and their money to a foreign service.
