I think Lemmy and the federation stand on its own and references to Reddit should be removed. Lemmy can grow organically on its own.

I very much disagree. Like it or not reddit has a large user base. Why not make it simple for people to migrate? All you would be doing is pushing away people from Lemmy. It’s not like anyone that has switched to Lemmy is going to drop out because the software allows you to transfer information from an account from a similar site.

That’s like taking away the import bookmarks and saved passwords functions on Firefox because you see Chrome and Edge as evil. If you want something you like to be successful, you need to make it convenient for people to try out.

Think about it. How long will Lemmy be a new backup or alternative to Reddit? It must grow organically at some point to become its own thing. And it has started to. We don’t have an onboard utility for FB, X, TikTok, etc. Authenticity does not evolve from duplicity.

We are quite similar to Reddit compared to any other social media platform. This is why the feature is a part of the app. Lemmy needs all the help it can get to drive user registration AND foster engagement. Finding similar communities from subs helps that. It is useful, so it should not be removed.
