I feel like a lot of people are missing the context that this was prompted by a Mario cosplayer sending inappropriate messages to a minor 😅
Nintendo is dogshit about their IP, but like I can’t really fault them for being upset that someone used the family friendly nature of one of their properties to facilitate an inappropriate interaction with a child. If I were Nintendo I’d be pretty unhappy about that too
Also the IP aggression isn’t entirely their fault, Japanese Copyright law requires companies to be waaaaaaaay more aggro than their American counterparts.
It actually caused such a controversy on YouTube a few years ago that YouTube had to release a feature to individual creators to selectively block their videos in certain countries so that they could avoid the risk of getting copy-striked because their video aired where companies are pushed to hit everyone they can with cease and desist letters.
Interesting, I actually didn’t know that, thanks for the additional context! I still find it frustrating but understanding the issue better is always a plus
It doesn’t help that the article takes a 90 degree turn to ramble about Nintendo IP rule34 which seems entirely irrelevant to the actual issue.
A hairy plumber that spends all his time stalking a princess is “family friendly”?
Yes, the cartoon plumber man who tries to rescue his girlfriend from the cartoon dino turtle monster thing is family friendly 😅
He’s a character from a game thats widely popular with children.
Imagine trying to fight Rule 34 of the Internet. That’s a losing battle right from the get-go. There’s a reason for the rule and a reason why it’ll never stop or be stopped so long as the Internet exists.
I really hope this leads to a drastic, many-fold increase in the amount of Rule 34 content of Nintendo characters. I hope people start tagging them on Twitter with it all. Nothing would make me happier.
This would only serve to advertise their ips, just look at Overwatch. If you really want to fuck with a corporation, the best way is to forget about them.
Yup, if you knew nothing about the game and only went to certain places on the internet, you’d think none of the Overwatch characters wear clothes.
As the prophecy commands
Thats fighting a uphill battle from the bottom of the Marianne Creek against someone on the K2 mountain and sprinkling the Streisand effect for good measures.
Here comes the Nintedo IP Karen again.
I don’t view this content myself. But people should be able to. Nintendo is driving me away due to their behavior and I’m losing interest in the company.
I doubt I’ll buy their next console. I have less time than I did back then, but if I’m on the line about it, I’ll say no based on their recent behavior.
I just pirat all their stuff and then not play it as a double fuck off.
I used to buy their stuff for years and also stopped over this shit. They’ve fallen from grace and smacked their face on every branch on the way down.
I don’t think their quality has slipped at all.
Oh no, their quality is great. The problem I have is with their legal shenanigans.
They’ve been like this for decades.
Streisand Effect is gonna introduce so many to Waluigi
God I fucking hate Nintendo, my first system was the 64, i had all their shit from the gameboy pocket until advanced. My friends try to get me to buy a switch and im like fuck that. If a company was the living embodiment of an asshole it would be nintendo, sometimes they put out good shit but it always smells.
I’m a PC player but I always wonder when people have this take. I dislike, hugely, their treatment of fans in the preservation space. However, as a company they seem to not do big layoffs, rarely buy companies or IP, and have a history of leadership falling on their swords (financially) during hard times to keep their employees.
I don’t dislike them as a whole because of those elements that are dead at large.
I could be wrong, I’m not deeply knowledgable outside of a handful of articles over the years.
I would rank Microsoft way worse though and I used to be in their ecosystem as a big fan. Biggest pusher of owning nothing.
I totally agree. I think Nintendo is a fantastic company in terms of:
- high quality games
- frequent use of their IP
- good treatment of staff
They’re pretty awful when it comes to protecting their IP (emulators, merch, etc), but in terms of doing the actual company bits, they’re one of the best.
I hate their legal side, and I’m not a fan of their pricing, but I like pretty much everything else about them.
I would rank Microsoft way worse
Strongly agree. They’re the reason both MTX and paying to play online are so commonplace.
Credit where its due sure, but im mostly talking about how they treat their fans.
[. . .]but it appears the company censored the question itself - which specifically related to a Mario cosplayer in Japan accused of sending lewd images to minors[. . .]
Yeah, I’m OK with going after those people
But not because it’s Mario, the images being about Mario have nothing to do with sending lewd pictures to minors. It’s not Nintendo’s business to go there, it’s the local authorities’. You know Nintendo will go overboard with this shit, as always.
Don’t let them find out about DeviantArt.
And I pledge to never buy a Nintendo product again.
I can’t believe I am actually saying this, but Nintendo, you make me wish I could cause more financial damage to your company than I am legally able to.
Pirat their stuff so they get more mad. Make hentai so they get even more mad. Send it to them by mail so they get a stroke from high blood pressure.
Nintendo called her Princess Peach. Rule 34 on 🍑 is on them.
Time to start Rule 34’ing a Blooper with a Bullet Bill on principle.
I kind of hope they try overextending their reach here
That would lead to HILARIOUS amounts of backlash
Just go outside Nintendo legal department.
Does Nintendo own either Sonic or Pikachu? If so, Chris Chan has maybe days before they come for her.
It’s okay, the courts are pretty easy on first-time offenders. I’m sure she’s never done anything this bad before.
Not Sonic, but they have an exclusive games publishing agreement with Gamefreak for Pikachu. So yeah, Chris Chan’s goose is cooked. Well, more than it already is.
Oh yeah because this stuff is just everywhere on the internet /s.
You have to go looking for this stuff. No one feels uncomfortable by it because the only times people would see it is if they’re googling it or already a part of a community. This is just Nintendo smashing the dmca button because their lawyers are bored
