I’m looking for new apps to try out. I have a soft spot for apps that are written in Swift or at least follow Apple’s HIG. I’m also curious to know what you use these apps for!
Apollo… (Too soon?)
First thing I thought of.
Mods… please pin this.

I second this. I love Avelon
+1 for Avelon, my favourite Lemmy client!
macOS: iTerm - terminal emulator Alfred - application launcher (and a lot more) Spark - email client DevonThink - finder replacement FuzzyTime - show time in menu bar rounded by 5 minutes Bartender - organize menu bar LosslessSwitcher - automatically switch sample rate and but depth based on music playing SoundSource - easily control sound input/output and levels PDFExpert - PDF editor Reeder - RSS reader Affinity Creative Suite - Rastor/Vector/Photo/Print enditor
iOS: Timepage/Actions - Calendar and task manager Marvis Pro - Apple Music client Authenticator - FOSS authentication app MusicSmart - lists details of songs and albums not otherwise mentioned or credited Aftership - simple and free shipment tracker Carrot Weather - A great weather app PCalc - a customizable calculator Overcast - a better podcast player
iPadOS: Mela - Recipe browser and ingredient checklist maker Procreate - iPad 2D art at its best Affinity Photo - Great port of a really powerful photo editor PDFExpert - Edit PDFs but with the addition of an Apple Pencil and little niceties as well as good for note taking all in one space.
Overcast!! — such a great podcast app
If you use an iPad Pro, the overcast layout is just stilly looking. I switched back to the Podcasts app. I heard he’s working on updating the UI, and I’ll try it again when it’s redone.
I bought it when it was a one time purchase. I love it a lot. Apparently it’s subscription now? It’s good but I wouldn’t rent it. I’m pretty much a hard no on anything with a subscription.
Right. The free version is good, it just shows ads for other podcasts… but I love the app and want Marco to keep developing it. So I paid.
Alfred and Rectangle are essential Mac apps.
What would you say makes Marvis Pro superior to the built in app? For $10 I want to make sure it’s worth it.
The first and foremost thing for me is aesthetics. I love being able to customize all of the colors and blur effects and button layout. Additionally, I like the gesture support within the UI. Lastly, I love how it integrates with Last.fm so all of my scrobbles are synced up without needing to scan.
I would not consider it a must have, but it makes so many quality of life improvements for apple music listeners.
Parcel (all platforms): the best shipment tracker you’ll ever use
Solves (all platforms): it’s basically identical to the built in calculator but is 1,000,000x better
Music Library Tracker (iOS, iPadOS): keeps track of the change in your Apple Music library and can automatically make a spatial audio playlist for you
Mlem (iOS, iPadOS): the best Lemmy client
Vinegar (all platforms): a Safari extension that makes YouTube use the native video player, adds PiP for free and removes ads!
Baking Soda (all platforms): replaces custom video players in other sites with the native one
Crouton (all platforms): a natively built recipe manager. I don’t use it much but it’s really well made
MacWhisper (macOS): uses openAI’s whisper model to create super accurate transcriptions of audio and video files
Monitor Control (macOS): allows you to control the brightness of external monitors (other than Apple’s)
Calipers Tape Measure (iOS): a super accurate set of Calipers for your iPhone
Cric Pulse (iOS): the only cricket app with live activities
Loving this thread!
Here’s mine:
- 1Writer - lovely little markdown app
- IceCubes - for Mastodon (Havn’t seen a better mastodon client yet, not even Ivory)
- Element X - A swift rewrite of element, the matrix client (though not yet feature complete but on a great way)
- Amperfy - A subsonic client to stream music from any subsonic server (like navidrome)
- Voyager - The sexiest lemmy client I’ve found so far
Thumbs up for Voyager. Very close to Apollo.
- Bear - Markdown Notes
- Lemma - Lemmy client (very influenced by Apollo)
- Parcel - Track packages
- Craftbound - Idle Game
- 1Password - Password Manager
Here are my most-used apps:
- Libby
- Todoist
- Pocket Casts
- The Google and Office suite of apps are each pretty good, and I use them a good bit.
- Voyager (for Lemmy)
- Dropbox, AnyList, Acrobat for everyday stuff
- Volume Pro gives you much finer control of the volume
- Sleep Cycle helps with tracking sleep hygiene
Libby is awesome. I’d add Hoopla and Kanopy to that list as well.
For casual gaming:
- Threes
- Dots
- Wordament
- Sage Solitare
For news and reading:
- NPR one in the car
- NetNewsWire for RSS feeds
Oh, Kami and Kami 2 are my favorite puzzle games!!!
macOS: iTerm is just superior and so configurable. Magnet is great for moving and snapping windows. Last recommendation: column mode in Finder. It’s perfect and should be the default everywhere!
Magnet definitely is on my must have list!
YNAB (Financial, subscription required)
Lost It! (Calorie counting)
AdGuard Pro (Ad blocker)
mSecure (Password manager)
Pixelmator (Image editor)
Smart Photo (Photo widgets)
Night Sky & SkySafari (Astronomy apps)Signal
Authy :: for TOTP
For_ me it will be: Organic maps for finding new tracks for walks plus Merlin Birds. Kindle - books, Mammoth and Voyager - mastodon and Lemmy, I love hue/I love hue too - simple games to kill the time.
I Am Rich
Don’t ask why it’s my favorite. If you know the story, you’ll know why.
Habitica is kind of fun if you’re looking to gamify your to-do list.
Remind Me Faster - a little tool that helps you to quickly add reminders to the native Reminders app. Very useful for power users of the reminders app.
Notion- notes, todos, project management Libby and Hoopla- ebooks, eaudioBooks, comics Goodnotes- more note taking (but a lot of people use this for digital bullet journaling) Procreate- art Things- honestly amazing task management, but I felt like I needed something available on pc or web for work, goes great with Bear which I saw someone else suggest. Ice cubes- mastodon Avelon- lemmy
