I wish it was so simple. Really it should be. A word can mean any number of things based on context or inflection but now i have to really be careful as to not offend. I feel like that’s a created thing.

Obviously i say things in a friendly way or in a mean way and I feel like we are just going the “you can’t say that word” route. When it’s not the word, it’s the context.

As such, yes anyone who finds that picture offensive falls into that group. It was also a great movie. Let’s dissect Spaceballs for racism next!

  • Neat. I tried this last night on my once top of the line machine (in 2012) because why not…

It didn’t upgrade my win10 install but at least it didn’t delete all my data. Maybe I goofed on that as I was tired.

I used the 23H2 iso but it installed 22H2.

I didn’t use the script, it picked up my existing valid key.

It fails to update. Perhaps that’s the point or bloat would come back?

But if it can’t update then what’s the point?

Again, might be my fault but I’m not really trusting this image yet. Not enough to reinstall and relicense my tools.

I use Linux where I can but I’m bound to some windows-only proprietary software. I do use a stripped down win10 VM for a lot of it but at least it updates.

Will update this comment if i find that I’m at fault.

  • I’ve used Pihole for so long… I bought the original pi as a curiosity but Pihole was best use of it.

Here is the problem though, which i assume applies to all adblockers: everything is now “sponsored links”. Google, Amazon, etc. They are of course blocked which is getting really frustrating.

So what do we do now? Is there a way to just send fake telemetry? Saw VLANs mentioned. Is that the way? I’m getting older and life gets busier and it’s harder for me to keep up on this.

  • It’s always the bagging thing that fails for me. I’m not the smartest person in the world but I can scan an item and place it in the bagging area. It’s kinda out of my hands at that point. Be it calibration or incorrect data sometimes it won’t recognize and after a couple attempts locks and some underpaid person has to come roll their eyes at me and swipe a card to let it go through.

I’ve probably just been unlucky and gave up 10yrs ago on that.

No they don’t train cashiers beyond what button to press. Produce is interesting. It’s been a while (love curbside service) since I’ve been in a grocery store but ours has tags on produce you show to a scale and it weighs it and prints out a sticker with a barcode.

And I just realized how abusable that is. I’m going shopping tomorrow!

    Oh what’s the 4011 thing? Doesn’t ring a bell.

  • It’s funny how divided a topic this is.

Could just be my area but the machines always fail in some way or another.

Give me 10%off if I am doing the job of an absentee cashier… Always cool seeing many checkouts all decked out in gear with noone there to run them. Ever.

OR, even better, use some decades old tech and spend a penny to put RFID tags on everything so I can just run my cart through and verify the list of stuff and click Yes, No, Maybe.

Somewhat related… is it just me or are liquor stores the best at this? I never even stop moving and I’m out. Then i go next door to the pet store to grab some animal chow and I stand in line for 10mins because just one register of 6 is staffed.

At least we can order everything online for the most part now.

  • They don’t care really. As has been my experience anyway.

I once had my car window smashed, a mix of gear taken…some was expensive, some was personal to me. I felt violated. Called the police, explained, gave S/Ns to what I could, told them exactly who did it. He didn’t give a shit. Actually made me feel like I was wasting his time. I think Seinfeld covered this…

“We’ll let you know if we find anything” “Do you ever find anything?” “No”

But oh, my reg is out of date and the plate scanner picked it up? Boom, they really kick it into gear. So that’s $130… i could just go take care of the tags immediately with a friendly warning but now don’t even want to. And in the end I end up pretty fucked.

If only they put that effort into other things I just might have gotten my linear power amps back. Props to anyone who knows that product.

  • That’s cool… 150k? Nice. I regret not getting one when i had the chance but I felt like it should had at least a small turbo. And i wasn’t overly confident with the aftermarket stuff. That said the gt86 platform is quite a base to build on.

But yeah, i hate the trend of a big touchscreen to do everything. Sometimes i wonder if it’s just getting old but I really feel like the UIs are awful.

Display is ok for GPS and maybe some audio but I certainly prefer standard tactile interface methods. You are right, dying breed. Enjoy your ride!

This is how my cats look at me when the food bowl runs empty. Could be just a polite request for food, could be sizing up what the most edible parts of me are. I don’t know but i play it safe and refill.

As it applies to this, I don’t know. But that cat is on about something

  • I feel you. My Nokia N900 and later N9 were great solutions. All my sms, aim, icq, msn etc was all seamless along with instant load time. Then came things like line, FB messenger, Whatsapp. It was just how to have everything in one place.

RCS is probably the best option at this point if Imessage could use it. Then i wouldn’t need other apps for those friends to get decent quality.

Sad to learn signal wasn’t the standalone service I thought it was. I might sound old but really don’t care about sticker packs. I do care about quality shares without another app.

  • Appreciate that but now I don’t know how to reply without sounding condescending… dammit! :) but you know, if you go back to 1995 bad boys that was how i communicated. Years later i relocated and nearly got killed for pointing out a funny and quite justified slight at a certain NFL team.

I’m not sure I have a point beyond stay trigger happy and call fuckers like me out! We all make mistakes and I have no problem being called out.

Shit, i still sound condescending don’t I? It’s just hard not to after a while. I don’t know if it’ll be Linux worthy but hit me up if you decide to try out borderlands 4. We’d be happy to have a new player in the group.

  • Great info, thanks. Most of my hardware is old. But that’s actually a good thing I think. I have a Lenovo ideacentre i plucked back from a friend as it was gathering dust. I upgraded the ram and SSD and installed neon on a whim and it’s amazing.

That’s what sorta started tracking me back… have continued using Linux for servers but i was impressed at that desktop. Now I know neon is a bit bleeding edge so any recommendations on a distro? I started with freebsd back in the day, then gentoo for desktop, then Ubuntu minimal for servers if that helps. Not afraid to get my hands dirty but prefer simplicity.

I found a 256GB SSD that should be enough for some testing. I need to grab some files off it but then it’s ready to go. Distro advice appreciated. Remember i just want to test :) TIA

  • It was indeed fun! All my rescues have an interesting sometimes tragic story. I’ll have to compile a book someday. Short of one kitten, I never posted anything on reddit. Though my first, who had to be put down at 18 because she was miserable, gained a little fame on fark back in the day.

Anyway, Carmen looks great! Healthy and happy and I love the black nose! It looks almost fake… you didn’t spray paint your cat right? Jk! Hard to believe you found her alone and crying years ago, but I’m glad she found you

Oh, FWIW I couldn’t see your pic on lemmy (boost) and had to log in to kbin on desktop and find this thread and then could see it. I thought fediverse stuff was all connected? Oh well, I got to see her and your cat-tax balance has been cleared. Have a good w/e!

  • Hah I had to look some of that up. I bet I could guess your age within a couple years. :)

DCS seems like a cash grab and travkir thing seems quite the gimmick. But i understand you wanting to play with your friends and so do they and they aren’t going to bring Linux support despite it’s likely built on it.

Windows is essentially free anyway these days so you’ll just have to suck it up for now. You can disable things like realtime scanning for a performance boost. If you can’t make your own DNS try quadr9 to block a majority of the telemetry and shit.

Being able to play with your friends is more important really. Just dual boot or use a VM to get your nix skills. I’m sure many won’t agree with me and that’s cool. There is nothing Linux can’t do, yet there are apps (or games) that will simply require windows to participate. Sucks, but that’s reality.
