My dad is still using the first 60w panel he bought in 1986, for 600$. Obvs added many more to his system, and who knows how efficient it is, but it does work, haven’t put a ampmeter on it though.

The orion drive is basically an engineering challenge. Very little new tech required. It could reach nearby stars in hundreds of years with no new physics.
Wanted to be crass and nerdy, simultaneously.
There’s giant chunks of water ice all over the place in the Kuiper belt, much easier to grab, not stuck in a gravity well full of corrosive oxygen and creepy creatures.
