JXL is the rightful heir to the throne and none of these treasonous corporate usurpers in the court can convince me otherwise. I’ll never bow to the Webp or Avif factions. While it looks bleak, I pray the crown finds its way to the head of the true king. Long live the Jpeg bloodline!

But really, webp was pushed because it supports DRM and avif is an implementation detail turned feature afterthought just because webp adoption sucked as much as the format does. I love AV1 for video but avif isn’t fit for purpose and webp is garbo. I really wish they didn’t take jpegxl out behind the shed for no good reason… It has some awesome engineering.

  • It sure fucking feels that way sometimes. I had an argument with one of my parents the other day over the fact that she was completely incapable of understanding any distinction between a war and a genocide. “It’s war; they’re the enemy. You kill the enemy in war” - in direct response to me asking if she was okay with elementary schools being bombed.

    Bizarre, surreal, and severely dejecting.

Perhaps being sane in an insane world is a type of insanity all it’s own.

  • AFAIK, nope. There are several personal projects which modify Signal to work on private infrastructure rather than use signal’s centralized service, but nothing intended for public consumption or at least not that I’ve heard of. Maybe search it.

Signal is good enough and has been pushing for more mainstream appeal and polish (e.g. gif search) Its Achilles heel and main drawbacks stem from it’s centralization: needing a phone number and routing thru Signal’s infra. But that can also benefits them in some ways. Most devs who would be tempted to change that would rather spend their time elsewhere: tox, matrix, i2p, tor, xmpp and irc shenanigans, etc. Signal is just hydrated, in its lane, unbothered; chugging along as its LLC dictates. No alarms, no fires, no compelling reason to do a hard fork.

Edit: it completely slipped my mind that Molly exists. So yeah there’s that. But they still use signal’s infra.
