The old home I grew up in still had original wood trim complete with years of partial diy restorations that gave it an incredible visual depth. It was such a highlight of my time there because everyone else’s in town was covered in the same white paint. The only story it could tell was how good/shit the previous owner was at painting
Grizzly bear would be a fun irony for me I think

3·5 months agoI wonder what the similarities are between Nepal and the Romanian revolution. That’s the only other one that comes to mind in which, as I understand it, the military defected to the side of the revolutionaries and then ceded power to a new regime

They used to do this and it turned out exactly how you describe. I would probably also add it’d incentivize politicians to dismantle educational institutions serving certain demographics

3·7 months agoPropaganda efforts large than we can imagine operating for decades. How has the rural poor identity morphed from union men and worker solidarity to backing military and police? It got too dangerous and they stomped it out with myths of foreign adversaries. I’m of the mind that we need to reach across political lines to overcome this, we can’t allow them to split the country evenly in half or we’ll be in a deadlock forever that just lets them do what they want. It can seem herculean but there are shades of it when a CEO is killed on the streets or a bunch of politicians work together to protect pedophiles; political identity fades and it becomes more obvious that it’s us against them
Also a lot of the most disenfranchised are kept from voting at all. Either they have to work, polling place is too far away and they don’t have a car, polling place getting changed, don’t have a permanent address

3·10 months agoFun fact: Alaska was invaded a little bit by Japan during WW2. On Attu Americans suffered heavy casualties from the weather and basically all of the Japanese force was killed in battle. On Kiska there was a pretty bad skirmish between US and Canadian forces resulting from mistaken identity and a ship hit a stray seamine before they found out the island was abandoned anyway. So a real bad time all around but still not really affecting industrial wellness
