4·1 day agoYeah the moment Bushido clicked with me I just feel in love with it. Really surprised it managed to keep me hooked for 24 hours!

2·1 day agoFair! If you can find anyone to play with you, you can try doing it in coop. Coop is 2vs2 so you only have 2 fights ahead so it’s much easier to do. And Bushido in coop is sooo fun!

Gaming@lemmy.world•[UFO 50] Planet Zoldath is the most evil game in the collectionEnglish
2·3 days agoI find Zoldath similar to Nethack in a way - all these hidden interactions, quick and often hilarious deaths, and lots of procgen of course. Edit: Planet Zoldath was released in 1984, the same year as the release of Hack on Usenet.
On an unrelated note, the “I wanna be the guy” dev have their personal website at kayin.moe where they often posts about indie games. I found this blog pretty cool. There are also a few posts about UFO 50.

Gaming@beehaw.org•I feel like replaying the Hello Charlotte trilogy but I'm afraid this game will wreck my heartEnglish
2·10 days agoIt’s funny how, with all the “but who’d think of children!”, the actual kids don’t really care much about violence and gore on their screens. It’s more that when they grow up they become terrified of it. Maybe we need to make gory media strictly for 18 yo or younger :D

1·10 days agoSame! Back in the day I could play Undertale’s genocide route without feeling much but nowadays even just reading through a good ending of a romantic manga makes me all teary.
And Hello Charlotte is one of the most honest pieces of media I’ve experienced. It’s like the author lets you into her inner world for awhile, with all the trauma and pain she’s been through hidden behind a thin veil of metaphors, using gore and pain to tell a story much more terrible than its components.

Gaming@lemmy.world•When I was a child I thought as a child...English
1·18 days agoFor me immersion depends more on sound design than on visuals.
Infra Arcana, the game that looks like this (screenshot’s not mine):

It is among the most immersive horror experiences for me. I still clearly remember walking down a long empty corridor, stumbling upon a door at the end of it, and when I approached the door something behind it started banging - it was so fucking scary!

3·19 days agoI’ve dealt with enough people who think their preferences are absolute that I just couldn’t be sure whether you’re one of them or not. I’m glad we agree that art is subjective.

1·19 days agoJust because you personally dislike certain art style doesn’t make it objectively bad. I’m a zoomer, I don’t have nostalgia for pixel graphics and yet I enjoy pixel art. I can’t stand CRT filters on pixel games (modern or emulated) btw.

71·19 days agoWith some modern photo-realistic games I can’t even discern anything on screen: it’s so much detail that my brain becomes overwhelmed :P
The new Doom is literally unplayable for me because of that (and the music).

2·1 month agoIt’s pretty complex, especially if you never played another traditional roguelike before. There’s a tutorial which… I’m not fully fond of but it’s good enough. You can see all the controls by pressing ‘?’ at any time, and you can do everything with a mouse only (helpful at first!).
A video might help but keep in mind the game is fairly fast-moving (big updates roughly every half a year) so guides might be a bit outdated.

Someone even made a “chart” of all the sprites changes during the game’s lifetime: https://reddit.com/r/dcss/comments/1kjlvdq/dcss_pokémon_evolution_chart/

1·1 month agoWhile I understand the reason people dislike attacks of opportunity, playing a roguelike without it feels so wrong to me. Melee brutes just can’t do a thing to you when you moving away from them, it’s so… weird!
