The idea of infrared pupil trackers is terrifying.
Imagine the tracking potential for insurance companies, law enforcement, etc…
I know this is offtopic, just the first thought that comes to my mind :(

I believe it, my disgusting little ICE brain doesn’t think of EV when I think car quite yet 😅 I hope there are good options available for the market here so that can change. In the meantime I might buy an old Nissan Leaf and mod the heck out of it to have better range and longevity, I don’t know yet.
The OP would rather an EV which tend to be newer. ICE you get a lot more years to pick from, some of which are pretty simple/low tech.
That’s simply not how it works. The only “computer” system that is required and widely used is still obd-II which has been around since 1996. Thats all the independent shops diagnose with whether the car is 1999 or rolled off the lot yesterday. Any other computer system on board is dealer specific and a specialised system NOT accessed during regular work. Quit spamming misinformation.
I don’t think we are missing much, I haven’t heard anything but horror stories about french car reliability. This is purely from German acquaintances I have as well as some mechanic opinions I have been given.
Late 90s and early through mid 2000s cars are gems as they are still very reliable as well as easy to maintain. Being a privacy advocate in this day and age practically requires you to get a cheap wrench set and learn the basics of maintaining one of these era vehicles.
Ehhh that’s a bit of a blanket statement that applies to dealers: I promise you my indie guy who does my tires and inspections will not be plugging anything in. Everything else I will be doing anyways.

It’s good to want, and I say that as someone who would dance for joy if an open source phone became viable. If you think starting a new ecosystem and expecting it to be “good, next gen, priced competitively” is feasible via volunteer work anytime soon, I want whatever you’re smoking :)

Who is we? what group of people has the dev funding and time to produce FOSS hardware and software to compete with the average android phone?

It does not, but I don’t sign into any Samsung/Google things and replace every system app with one from F-Droid including the launcher. The experience is fairly similar to my old pixel with grapheneos like this. I am sure it is far cry from as secure, but I am realistic about my threat model and am willing to make trades to be more sustainable and convenient. The only other difference is the system ui skin, which does its job just fine IMO

Typing this on an samsung xcover 6 pro right now. Costs less than 200 used, has a removable battery, up to 1tb micro SD card support, and a headphone jack.
Here’s a much crazier bug report that has been open for 14 years: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=627771

sys + v can be bound to bring up clipboard history if you are using KDE!
Those are good older cars! Did you replace the motor with an aftermarket unit or OEM part? One thing I have learned is with some components, getting the cheapest one can line you up for doing the job again in no time.
What make and model if you don’t mind me asking? Certain brands definitely cheaped out on the build quality around that time. I find older cars (late 90s, early 2000s) built by Toyota, Volvo, Mercedes, and BMW to be of incredible construction.
Not sure if you can do that without disabling the cars core functions, if my memory serves me.
Not a strict guide, but privacy wise the earlier in the 2010s the better. If you can find a low mileage 90s/2000s that’s even more simple and less connected, but you begin to enter the age issue where everything rubber is disintegrating. Pretty much to care about your privacy in a car you have to become a little bit of a gearhead to keep some simple old beater healthy and maintained.

Yeah, how dare he be born in a different country/not have the finances to leave. Poor + bad + ratio, he is just as bad as Trump.
Don’t you see how fucking idiotic you are being? Bad things happen to a country when the people overwhelmingly lack empathy. You are a prime example of one of those people.
I think the “hah good one” was more in response to believing the masked thugs will ever be brought to justice, even if the dems ever gain power again.
It penetrates and ricochets inside instead of exiting, makes for good brain jelly!
