From my perspective mails are federated. If I want to explain federation as a concept to someone I always use mail as an example because everyone can write to everyone independent of the provider, you can selfhost it easily, you could move from one company to another (if you use your own domain), protocols are all FOSS.
So at least it’s an open and distributed system. What would be missing for it to count as federated?
As per the statement all remaining instanced will go down over time, though not sure how long that will take.

I also didn’t watch this video here but saw videos earlier where livestock was fed with expired food that supermarkets weren’t able to sell in time. All kinds of products like vegetables, bread, cake, yogurt etc. were delivered to the farmers directly or to intermediate companies. In many cases the food was still in its packaging, e.g. a plastic bag around a loaf of bread. But to keep costs low everything just went into a huge shredder and was then fed to the animals. Including lots of micro (and not so micro) plastics.
So the cost cutting is not about “explicitly feeding plastics as a cheap filler” but rather “accepting to have plastics in the food in favor of lower sorting costs”.
In the documentary I watched this was described a common practice all over Europe.
Unpopular opinion: I hate Elon Musk and basically never thought I’d consider buying a tesla. But to be fair, I did quite some research and a couple of test drives with various cars and overall the model 3 is the best deal for my requirements. Especicially, it seems to be the most energy efficient car in that size and cost range. You can drive a model 3 with around 15 kWh / 100 km even in winter on the highway where competitors range around 18-22.
Regarding the two buttons for the turn signals: yes I’d probably prefer the old-fashioned approach with a lever but the two buttons are definitely not as bad as claimed in all the articles. I got used to it pretty quickly during the test drive and also in roundabouts it is practicable even thought not the most ideal approach.
I’ve always missed a rating/feedback/comment feature in F-Droid. A lemmy-based solution would be pretty cool.

Also elderly people want to take pictures from time to time. Or use WhatsApp to join family group chats etc. Furthermore, a big & bright touch screen is definitely easier to read and handle than the old dumb phones where the same key may have a dozen of features depending on the context.
From my perspective you don’t necessarily need a simplified Android but only a simplified launcher. There are plenty of senior friendly launchers in the play store.

Reminds me of the traffic situation in eastern Asia. Huge amounts of cars, scooters etc. mostly ignoring any traffic rules. From an outside perspective it looks like there must be thousands of injuries a day but considering the vast amount of individuals it’s still pretty safe and efficient.
And if you click the link by mistake it opens in Edge instead of your default browser. Edge then immediately tries to convince you to set it back as default and automatically opens 3 tabs of various articles in MSN and Bing.com with completely irrelevant information to make damn sure to distract you from your original link. 🎉
I quickly googled some numbers, so no guarantee for 100% correctness.
Desalination uses about 3.6kWh/m3 of water. A generator can produce around 1.5kWh/litre of fuel. 500,000 litres of fuel would result in 750,000 kWh. 750,000 kWh would result in 208,333 m3 or 208,333,000 litres of water. That theoretically would allow you to create around 200 litres per person if you use the entire amount of fuel on water desalination.
But this calculation only works in a hypothetical scenario and not in a real life scenario. Distribution of the water to all the people will require a lot of energy as well, e.g. for tank trucks. And I think in an active war zone you probably won’t find world class logistics.
Furthermore, you also need fuel and electricity for other critical infrastructure: firetrucks, hospitals, phones, cooking, …
That doesn’t sound a lot tbh… If you calculate with 2M people there, it’s just 0.25 litres per person. I don’t think that would be sufficient to filter vast amounts of water.

Not sure about that. Sure, you might drive up your short term sales if consumers think they’re getting a great 5* product at a bargain. But in the long run, your customers will be disappointed by the quality and turn away from the platform. I hear more and more complaints about fake products being delivered, service degrading and real brands being drowned in the search results with Wish/Temu-like rubbish on Amazon.
I am still a regular customers at Amazon and I even still pay for the Prime membership but my shopping behavior has changed a lot over the years. Instead of buying expensive stuff like TVs, notebooks, sport equipment etc. I nowadays mostly buy cheap stuff due to the “free” shipping. Super glue, adapters, a cable here and there, little kitchen supplies etc.
I don’t trust Amazon anymore for bigger things which from they’d profit the most.
Also Prime memberships are questioned more and more across my friends and family. And I think fake ratings are one important aspect for that. Among others like treating their employees like shit, having a horrible person as CEO, etc.

If the rules don’t specify the size of the paper or the font size there’s easier ways to fit more content but great idea :D
From my perspective deep fakes will lead to a short but massive peak of harassment until everyone is aware of the technology and its capabilities. Once the technology reaches the mainstream and everyone is able to generate such content with ease, people will just stop caring. If these videos are everywhere, it’s easy to play it off as a fake. It might even help victims of actual revenge porn. Virtual nudity will become less of a deal, probably even in real life.
From my perspective the bigger issue of deep fakes is news. We already have a huge issue with lies on social media and even TV and newspapers today and once we can no longer trust what we see it will be incredibly hard to build up trust for any sources.
Fake videos of politicians being spread to harm their credibility, fake videos of war crimes to justify an attack. Or vice versa if there’s an authentic video of a crime the offenders will just deny the authenticity. But in contrast to Trump’s “fake news” claims today, it will be more or less impossible for normal people to fake check anything.
