Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I once heard someone say, 'Jobs are like high school but with adults.' Would you say that's accurate?
31·24 days agoThe idea of growing up is broadly a lie or misconception. Some people realize they are now responsible for themselves and perhaps even others, and that is pretty much the biggest change psychologically after puberty. A lot of people don’t have that realization or much great impact from it, so yeah, a lot of “grown-ups” working jobs are not all that different from highschoolers.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•so I'm thin skinned and cannot get over established coworkers lazying around massively while I toil. Kudos to all of you who can. I want out.
4·2 months agoThis is always a management issue. If the so-called lazy persons are not your management then You should be having a discussion with management about them, though I would still make great effort to not make it trash talk. You should make sure your hard work is being recognized and compensated for.
Of course, if the lazy persons are management, then the job itself was doomed. Remember that most people quit managers, not jobs.
I am not saying you should stick around, just keep this in mind for the next round of employment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How long do you work at a job before you add it to your resume?
171·2 months agoThe problem I would see most with a 5-month entry is, why is this person leaving so soon? Are they going to leave us just as quickly?
Different industries and managers are going to interpret things differently. If you can justify the short stint and especially if you are job hunting while keeping the current job, then I wouldn’t worry much about it, just be prepared for it if it comes up as a question. And of course keep in mind, trash talking past employers never looks good.

Not a lawyer, but my understanding is if they find illegal stuff during discovery for an unrelated charge, you can be charged for that as well. One caveat would be if the original search was illegal, so say you see some police in public and you start recording them, then they come and take your phone away as evidence for the crime of recording police, which everyone knows is not actually illegal. They did not have the right to take your phone to begin with so anything they find on your phone then should be not admissible as evidence against you. Again, not a lawyer.
I would totally have one as a pet but they do not do well in captivity.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would be considered "proficiency in Linux"?
19·6 months agoApply and see. Worst case is you learn something.
My interviews for linux-related roles were basically, “how do you change directories? What does ls do? How do you edit a file?” (Last one was trickily open-ended to also see what my preferred editor is). I’m not even sure they asked where log files are typically stored.
As for what to put on a resume, just say that you run a home lab or something.
I’ve enjoyed TES: Blades and Fallout Shelter, though I think they both got too micro transactional.
RetroArch even with onscreen keys is surprisingly good, if that’s your thing.
Osmos and Super Hexagon are oldies but goodies, and not pay to play.

Off the top of my head I cannot remember the specifics, but there are several options during boot that you can make optional, for instance don’t wait until there’s an internet connection.
I thought she chunked the puppy at the end…
Empathy is like sharing an experience.
Alice is holding a stack of papers, they get a papercut and react (yelp, pull their hand back, maybe suck on the injury). Bob sees Alice’s experience and may remember when they had gotten a papercut before or just imagine what that experience is like, and will share in the same feelings (or how Bob would imagine Alice is feeling, anyway). Bob may yelp too, or fidget with their own (uninjured) finger.
