TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•Replace One Word In A Star Trek Quote With SausageEnglish
9·5 days agoEarl Grey Sausage. Hot. 😉
I like this.
I’m a staunch atheist who likes a holiday.
Jesus was most likely born in the spring or fall a few years earlier than we recognize, if he was even a single person or existed at all. The Church, as it did every time, took existing holidays and co-opted them.
The end of the Roman calendar year is an amalgam of pagan holidays that celebrate the shortest day/longest night. A lot of the traditions we associate with Xmas are celebrating the beginning of the lengthening of the day and the return to life/springtime.
Xmas has always been a meta holiday. Most are. Enjoy the company of friends and family just as people have for millenia, no matter what banner is hanging over the mantle.

There are 2 images of ‘the evolution of man’ on this page. The 2nd one seems close to what you’re asking for.

303·1 month agoHey man, let’s take some poorly written beat poetry and put it over mediocre guitar compositions. Then we can take a talented keyboardist but make him play the shittiest sounding electric organ. And we can make sure the recording makes it all sound like a cat and some tin cans in a dryer.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could give a dead actor one more movie, made at any point in their career, what would it be?English
11·2 months agoPhillip Seymour Hoffman. He can come back and do anything at any time. He had so much more to give and so much more to receive. God damn shame.
I’d love to see Gilda Radner come back for Weekend Update.
Annie Wersching should still be playing the Borg queen.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is the US currently in a recession or entering one?English
22·2 months agoI don’t know if this link will work, but Moody’s just released a statement that almost half of US states are in a recession. Closer Look on GPB had a Moody’s economist on their podcast today:

222·2 months agoIt doesn’t look like they had a control group of people doing the strength training without any protein supplement. I would assume that group would also perform the same.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What percentage of the world population ages 30+ do you suppose is capable of financially supporting themselves & living & thriving independently?English
2·3 months agoAgreed on the independence part. We are much more interdependent than we let on (in the US especially, but other places as well).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What percentage of the world population ages 30+ do you suppose is capable of financially supporting themselves & living & thriving independently?English
72·3 months agoIf everyone 30+ got together and collectively decided what thriving meant, then worked to reach those goals, then I think we would all be thriving.
The majority isn’t hoping for a vacation home or to send their kids to Ivy League schools or to buy a bigger boat. The majority of middle class folk I talk to regard thriving as being comfortable enough to send the kids to some postsecondary school and take a few weeks vacation out of the country. They want to have enough to retire at 65 and live a modest life, be able to spoil their grandkids a little… nothing crazy.
The ability for all of us to thrive is already here. It is only the slight matter of systemic overhaul that prevents us.
I know her job is to work with feet, but I still hope they know each other. Well.
Okay, now defend us from the foreign censorship that Israeli lobbyists baked into our state constitutions. https://www.newsweek.com/pro-palestinian-protest-states-colleges-illegal-bds-1895292

9·5 months agoI have two theories. Section 31 was terrible at recruiting covert ops and we’ve seen their blundering over and over again on the small screen. Or, they were very good at covert ops and we’ve only seen the few times they misjudged the morality of their operatives.

science@lemmy.world•Ozzy’s DNA sequence reveals rare form of Parkinson'sEnglish
25·5 months agoWasn’t the genome sequencing in 2010 to determine just how the hell he wasn’t suffering from his epic substance abuse? So that we could get some of that Ozzy sauce and party til we drop, of course. Did Keith Richards ever do the same?

Rage bait, maybe. But I chuckled, and that is good enough for me.
