I have been an apple fanboy since 1979. Their recent moves to appease the current administration have taken away all of my enthusiasm. I had already un-googled and un-reddited my life, I have been seriously thinking about un-appleing as well. Gulf of fucking America. Go fuck yourself Apple.

Well to be fair, it is the official name in the US now. It is not like trump ordered apple or Google to change the name.

Apple or google don’t get to decide how to name geographical places.

Of all the things to maybe boycott Apple for, I think it’s kinda funny that this is where some people draw the line

You’ll find that fascism, and supplicating to it, are where many people draw the line.

Seems like a pretty reasonable place to draw the line in the sand. Most people can’t safely manage their data and communication privacy because they aren’t tech people and as much as apple’s privacy stances are mostly marketing related. Out of the box and low configuration it’s more secure and private than using a stock Google device.

Encrypted at rest data storage with ADP, encrypted messaging, zero touch VPN with safari private browsing. It’s easy to recommend Apple products to privacy conscious but not tech literate friends. Or at least it was until the pivot to bend the knee to the current administration

Haha, okay let’s ignore the fact that Apple Maps shows Taiwan as a province of China, but only for Chinese users. It’s been like that for years, but we don’t care about China or Taiwan, so Apple gets a pass there. We can also ignore the inconvenient fact that Google changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico in Google Maps too. I suppose it doesn’t matter that the US GNIS officially changed the name of the Gulf, and that Apple is simply following its obligations as a mapping provider by respecting a region’s naming preferences for disputed entities (similar to Google). We also don’t care that Apple is clowning on the US by only showing the new name in that region. No, fuck Apple for not taking it upon themselves to decide that the current US administration is illegitimate, and not being petty by refusing to rename a thing in their mapping app

I totally understand complaining about Apple doing this, but to actually boycott them over this is childish. Go ahead and get rid of your iPhones, though. Just don’t forget to boycott Google and Android too. You won’t do it, but to anyone who actually does: respect

Sorry about the rant, but this is just insane to me

          • @Celestus @TORFdot0 @apple_enthusiast this is where the rubber meets the pavement so-to-speak. The insane, corrupt, bigoted, unconstitutional, fascism of the Trump regime is in the news but doesn’t confront most people directly just yet. Most haven’t really seen the effects of the CDC, NIH, or even gestapo tactics of ICE personally. But Apple Maps, from a company that, until the last decade or so, has epitomized anti-establishment, now kowtowing to the epitome of American fascism brings it home.
