    I am reminded of the US response to Japanese cars in the 60s and 70s, which worked out so well for the US auto industry.

    I think it worked out pretty well for American auto workers in the end. I care less about the US auto companies and more about American auto workers. Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan all have factories in the USA producing cars for domestic consumption.

      Detroit used to be one of the most prosperous cities in the USA…

        The decline of Detroit would have happened anyway, but perhaps not quite as extremely. It just doesn’t take as many humans to build cars today than it did in the 1950s.
