Israel’s Supreme Court on Monday struck down a key component of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s contentious judicial overhaul, a decision that threatens to reopen the fissures in Israeli society that preceded the country’s ongoing war against Hamas.
Those divisions were largely been put aside while the country focuses on the war, which was triggered by a bloody cross-border attack by Hamas. Monday’s court decision could reignite those tensions, which sparked months of mass protests against the government and had rattled the cohesion of the powerful military.
…
In Monday’s 8-7 majority decision, the court narrowly voted to overturn a law passed in July that prevents judges from overturning government decisions they deem “unreasonable.”
Thank goodness! I have a sinking feeling that this won’t be the end of the issue, but hopefully this is the beginning of the end for Netanyahu.
It was before this…
He tried to say judges can’t over rule his government, and there was mass protests and he was about to lose power.
Like a month later his government completely dropped the ball and an attack happened.
He was hoping to pull a George Bush.
Instead Israelis are remembering his policies are what got them here.
The tough thing about Israeli democracy, is far right extremists all over the world gets to move there and start voting as long as they’re the right religion.
So they have had a near constant infux of rightwingers for decades who aren’t tired of war because they just showed up yesterday.
People against Netanyahu aren’t going to move to Israel just to vote against him.
I’m sure it doesn’t help that he’s letting the military slaughter the Israeli hostages that were taken on 10/7 as well. That alone was the end of his rulership. He should fear his next election. If he’s not removed before that.
The country was literally established by extreme right-wing zionist ideals. Read the book “The 100 Years War on Palestine.”
No, it was established because the Allies didn’t particularly want a Jewish population in their countries even after WW2.
So they “gave” them Israel, with the bonus of knowing it would be a magnet for religious attacks due to its location.
So now to avoid WW3, the world powers had a place for proxy wars that also happened to have an insane amount of fossil fuels and easily bribable governments.
The whole thing was/is fucked. And generations of people have been caught in the crossfire, and we’re still looking at WW3.
Plus Israel now has those nukes they won’t admit to openly…
Oh I thought it had to do with all the terrorist attacks they were committing because the British were trying to slow down the rate Jews could immigrate to the region and displace the indigenous population.

“Gave” is an interesting choice of wording, considering.
But please, do go on.
Israel has had nukes for a long time, presumably tech gifted by the Americans that they have bent over a barrel.
I have a vague memory that apartheid South Africa hooked them up with the bomb.
That’s just another biased take that selectively chooses a different narrative.
Read at least several books from different perspectives and make up your own mind.
Great points. Appreciate the insight 👍
Good - next strike down Netanyahu’s immunity claims
Wasn’t the main thing people were upset with was that the judicial overhaul made it so that the courts COULDN’T overturn laws?
I was a bit confused by this as well. How can the court overrule a law that prevents the court from overturning laws? It appears the court has given a huge middle finger to this law and is basically saying, “fight me”.
Netanyahu’s government could decide to ignore Monday’s ruling, setting the stage for a constitutional showdown over which branch of government has ultimate authority.
The nice thing about this is that Israel is destroying itself from the inside.
His allies have called for… perpetuating military draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox men…
People who are eager to start wars never want to fight in them.

It’s nuts that the decision was that close. Even justices voted to make themselves useless.
