Was moving an office chair once in college. Only way I could get it to fit into my car blocked all the odd gears.

Yup, that’s exactly it. Shaping of the chair, car seat, and passenger dashboard meant that was the only way it could face. Thankfully, the car had no complaints starting from 2nd, so it wasn’t the worst.
