I am half way done with mine, which means I only have 3/4 left to write, then I will be 90% done.

And the kicker is that once you’re done you are sick of your field and end up doing something completely unrelated, where the fact that you even got that title goes unnoticed

That’s not true! That’s not true at all!

I had a colleague proofread it and my PI also read it once… probably.

Thank god. I cannot verify the quality of that trash based on my mental state by the time it was over. I hope no one ever reads mine.

Or at least someday I hope to overcome the PTSD and be able to read it again. In an ideal world I’d like to release an updated version/errata.

Guys, I put GW and SW instead of GP and SP and it makes me die inside.

lol bruh. I couldn’t get my job without my PhD because of bullshit elitism, but fuck if I give a damn about 1-electron transfers n shit. I make money by handling money and writing code. Worked out handsomely for me.

Like Nas says: go legit. Believe in yoself. Live the life you deserve.

As someone in an important position once said to me, having a PhD shows that you have frustration tolerance.

I don’t have an advanced degree but that’s higher education in general, isn’t it? Just a bunch of hoops to jump through for the sole purpose of proving that you’re willing and able to jump through hoops. And yet nobody has ever asked to see my diploma in 20+ years of working.

This angle would be akin to saying that a PhD degree is like having tattoos and other body modifications on your brain and probably on your cardiac muscle.

I had coworker slip on ice and break her laptop containing the only copy of her 90% complete thesis

She spent an additional 10 grand sending it in for data recovery and was not successful in retrieving it

    Trve story

When I did my master’s thesis and it was like this non stop for that last year. In my thesis defense I could tell my advisors wanted me to do another year of work, I was so absolutely done at that point, I didn’t want to spend another cent on that degree and really was ready to walk away from it. They gave me a passing grade anyways because it looks better for the school to have me graduate in their statistics then if I had quit.

Sorry I must have structured the sentence in a confusing way, I did a full masters program, but they had doubts about the work I did and I could tell they wanted me to spend another year in the program, so two more semesters, how ever many months that is. I don’t know what part of the world you’re from or how you upper level schools structure their “year” but yeah two more semesters. I think they’re like four months each semester, so yeah that long. I was just done at that point and didn’t want to fork out any more money, honestly if they decided not to award my degree I would have been fine with that decision too, they just didn’t want it on paper someone “flunking” out of their degree program.

Do what I did: never write it! I put as much on my resume but not once has an employer verified my education. I could put anything!
