I had a Microsoft Tivo competitor that worked with DirecTV in the early 2000s that I really liked. Visual Studio and VS Code aren’t bad for what they are. The Zune was pretty awesome. I have had some good times on all generations of XBOX.
I guess what I am saying is that despite my hatred for MS, they haven’t been completely awful. Definitely not in the Comcast and various phone companies (I would like to single out Verizon for being particularly scummy) tier of hatred.

To be clear, sometimes authority bias is good and proper. For instance, valuing the opinion of a climate scientist who has been studying climate chaos for thirty years more than your Aunt who saw Rush Limbaugh say climate change is a hoax in the 1990s is normal and rational.
Basically, authority bias as a reasoning flaw stems from misidentifying who is authoritative on a subject.

The amount discovered in each of the last three years has been less than a year’s worth of consumption. The global consumption rate is still rising. At some point we will necessarily run out. The lack of readily available reserves has already lead to “innovations” like fracking, oil sands, and deep sea extraction. Those techniques weren’t profitable when production is easy, but they have delayed the inevitable.
I fully expect to see solar powered wells extracting oil that otherwise has a negative EROI in my lifetime.

I have done quite a bit of C, C++, Ada, and Pascal development. I recently got into Rust. I am still getting used to Rust, but it feels a bit like someone tried to apply Ada to C++. I like the modern development environment, but I am slower writing code than I would be in Ada or C++. The one feature of Ada that I really like and want other languages to adopt is the Rep spec. I write driver code and being able to easily and explicitly identify which symbol corresponds to which bit is really good.

My senior year in high school, my English teacher started the year by having us turn in a list of all of the books we had read. My list was much longer than most of my classmates. He then assigned us books to read and report on based on some criteria (hypothesis: books that would make us miserable). I got assigned two existentialist plays, “Waiting for Godot” and “No Exit.” I think those plays did permanent damage to my psyche.
(Sidenote: a classmate who didn’t read very much got assigned Virginia Wolff. She thought it very unfair that I only had to rea d couple of plays.)
I use VsVim when I use VS, but I do most of my code development in Vim. I use VS for a particular product that I support. It works well enough that I can’t complain to much, but someone else much more knowledgeable about the tool set it up for me.
My primary development environment is a centos7.3 virtual box with various options (Eclipse). I mostly just use raw gdb because I have been using it long enough that I don’t have to think about it too much and it’s pretty portable knowledge.
